Kata - the dance of the martial arts - is the key training component of this
ancient art form. If you were to observe a martial art class in a local dojo
(training hall) you would see individuals performing strenuous exercises and
practicing rigorously the techniques being taught that day. An older individual
would look at that level of physical intensity with apprehension - and rightly
so. The older person operates with a different set of bodily parameters.
However, martial art training is still available.
Kata is the execution of movement in an exacting and precise pattern. This
practice brings about muscle tonality, deeper and more regulated breathing,
deeper concentration and focus, and increased balance. And, of course, a superb
method of self defense, should the need arise. In this course, the practice of
Kata will be performed slowly and exactingly. And after learning, the forms can
be practiced without the need to attend a class.
