This course will focus on political, economic, social, diplomatic and military
developments in Britain in 2010. It will cover major differences between U.S.
and British political and electoral systems; the results of the British election
on May 6; the formation by the Conservative and Liberal Democrat parties of the
first coalition government in Britain since World War II; the policies of the
new government on major domestic issues including deficit reduction, electoral
and parliamentary reform, immigration, education, policing, health care,
pensions and decentralization of governmental responsibilities to local
governments in England and regional governments in Scotland and Wales; and
British foreign policies including British roles in the European Union, NATO and
the NATO operation in Afghanistan and the relationship between Britain and the
U.S. Half or more of each class will be reserved for questions and discussion.
Dean Mahin has a BA in history and political science and a MA in international
affairs. He worked in or for U.S. international agencies for forty years. In the
late 1950s and earl 1960s he arranged the U.S. visits of a number of members of
British parliament and British journalists. He has made four trips to Britain.
Since 2004 he has been vice president for program coordination of the
International Forum of SCC and a frequent moderator or panelist on Forum
programs.
